Overview

🐋 Types of Whales in Mauritius

The waters off the west coast of Mauritius offer a magical setting to encounter whales—huge, mysterious, and truly unforgettable. In this region, two whale species regularly appear: the humpback whale and the sperm whale.

🌊 Humpback Whale

Scientific name: Megaptera novaeangliae

  • 📅 Best season: July to November

  • 📏 Size: 12–16 m (40–50 ft)

  • ⚖️ Weight: ~36,000 kg

  • 🐳 Type: Baleen whale

The humpback whale stands out for its long pectoral fins, knobby head, and spectacular acrobatics, often leaping completely out of the water. During the winter months, these whales migrate to warmer equatorial seas to mate and give birth before returning to colder waters.
🎶 In addition, male humpbacks produce complex songs that last 10–20 minutes and repeat for hours.

🌊 Sperm Whale

Scientific name: Physeter macrocephalus

  • 📅 Best season: Almost all year round

  • 📏 Size: 15–18 m (50–60 ft)

  • ⚖️ Weight: 45–70 tons

  • 🦷 Type: Toothed whale

The sperm whale ranks as the largest toothed whale on Earth. It features a massive, square-shaped head and dives to extreme depths in search of food. Unlike humpbacks, sperm whales remain in Mauritian waters throughout the year, which makes sightings possible in almost every season.

⛵ End of the Excursion

After enjoying an incredible time at sea observing these majestic animals, you will head back to the pier.
🕧 Expected return to Black River: around 12:30 p.m. (sometimes later)

🌿 Responsible Whale Watching

Generally, whales enter the lagoon between 06:00 and 13:00
🤝 Throughout the excursion, guides follow strict rules to respect the animals
🌍 As a result, their natural environment, behavior, and daily rhythms remain protected

Ultimately, a whale encounter in Mauritius goes far beyond a simple activity—it becomes a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
